“How much will it cost?” is the first question almost every customer asks — and the honest answer is that no two moves are priced the same. A studio flat moving three streets away and a four-bedroom house relocating to Manchester are entirely different jobs.

The seven factors that determine your price
1. The size of your property
This is the biggest single factor. More rooms means more items, more packing, more loading time, and often a larger vehicle or a second crew member. Most removals firms price around property size as a starting point, then adjust for the details below.
2. Distance
A local move within the same London borough is charged very differently from a long-distance relocation. Local moves are usually priced by time and vehicle size; long-distance moves factor in mileage, fuel, driver hours, and whether the job can realistically be completed in a single day.
3. Access at both ends
Access is the factor customers most often forget, and it can change a quote significantly. A ground-floor flat with a parking bay directly outside is straightforward. A third-floor Victorian conversion with no lift, a narrow stairwell, and a controlled parking zone is a much longer job with the same quantity of furniture.
Tell your removals company about stairs, lifts, long carry distances, and parking restrictions upfront. A quote based on incomplete information is a quote that changes on the day.
4. Volume of items
Two homes of identical size can hold very different amounts. Lofts, garages, sheds, and home offices add up quickly. Heavy or awkward items — pianos, safes, American-style fridge freezers, large wardrobes — may need additional handling.
5. Vehicle requirements
Small van, medium van, Luton van, or multiple vehicles: each carries a different rate. Choosing correctly matters in both directions. Too small and you pay for return trips; too large and you’re paying for space you never filled.
6. Additional services
Packing assistance, packing materials, furniture dismantling and reassembly, and waste or clearance work alongside the move are usually priced separately. They’re often worth it — professional packing is faster and reduces breakages — but you should see them itemised rather than buried in a total.
7. Timing
Demand shapes price. The end of the month, Fridays, weekends, bank holidays, and the summer peak are the busiest slots in London. A midweek move in the middle of the month is frequently cheaper and easier to schedule.
What should be included in a proper quote
Before you accept any quote, check that it clearly states:
- The vehicle size and the number of crew members
- Whether the price is fixed or an hourly estimate
- What happens if the job overruns
- Goods-in-transit and public liability insurance cover
- Whether packing materials are included or charged separately
- Any congestion charge, ULEZ, parking, or waiting costs
- VAT status
A quote that covers all seven points is one you can plan around. A single number in a text message is not.
Why the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest move
Unusually low prices normally mean something has been left out. The most common are inadequate insurance, an undersized van that forces a second trip, a single mover where two were needed, or an hourly rate with no cap that climbs steadily through the day.
The genuinely cheapest move is the one that’s quoted accurately the first time, completed in one visit, and arrives without damage.
How to reduce the cost of your move
- Declutter first. Every item you don’t move is an item you don’t pay to move. Sell, donate, or arrange a waste clearance before moving day.
- Pack it yourself. If you have the time, packing your own non-fragile items reduces labour costs.
- Move midweek and mid-month. Avoid the last Friday of the month if your dates are flexible.
- Sort parking early. A suspended bay costs less than an hour of crew time spent carrying furniture from three streets away.
- Dismantle in advance. Flat-pack furniture taken apart before the crew arrives saves loading time.
- Be accurate. A precise inventory means a precise quote and no surprises.
